After more than a month of silence, the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings have restarted sign-and-trade discussions centered on restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, league sources told The Athletic’s Sam Amick.
According to the report, the two Pacific Division rivals recently re-engaged, although negotiations have made only modest headway. Sacramento’s renewed interest signals the club has not abandoned hopes of acquiring the 21-year-old forward.
Previous offer still on the table
Earlier in the offseason, the Kings presented Kuminga with a three-year, $63 million offer sheet and proposed sending Malik Monk and a protected 2030 first-round pick to Golden State in a corresponding trade. The Warriors rejected the package, questioning Monk’s fit and balking at his $21.6 million player option for 2027-28. Accepting Monk would also hard-cap Golden State at the first tax apron under base-year compensation rules, limiting roster flexibility.
The structure of Sacramento’s future pick is another sticking point; team officials reportedly view the current protections as too restrictive.
Golden State counters with new deal
The Warriors have made fresh proposals to keep Kuminga, including a three-year, $75 million contract featuring a team option in the third season. Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, has pushed back, insisting on a player option while keeping an $8 million qualifying offer in play. Signing the qualifying offer would give Kuminga a no-trade clause for one year and allow him to reach unrestricted free agency in 2026.
With the NBA’s October 1 deadline for restricted free agents fast approaching, the impasse faces a decisive window. Golden State can raise its bid, Sacramento can adjust its terms, or Kuminga can accept the one-year qualifying offer and bet on himself.
