Warriors, Kuminga Still Apart on New Contract Ahead of Camp

The Golden State Warriors and restricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga have not reached a contract agreement with training camp less than two weeks away.
ESPN’s Anthony Slater and Shams Charania report that Golden State recently offered a three-year, $75.2 million package. The deal would guarantee $48.3 million over the first two seasons and give the Warriors a team option for Year 3. The average salary aligns with the fully guaranteed contract the Chicago Bulls just awarded Josh Giddey, but Kuminga’s third season would remain non-guaranteed.
Kuminga and agent Aaron Turner are pushing for either a player option or a higher annual salary—closer to $30 million—if the team insists on retaining full control of the third year. Earlier this summer, the Warriors had put a two-year, $45 million proposal on the table.
Owner Joe Lacob, who selected Kuminga seventh overall in the 2021 draft, has publicly backed the 21-year-old but is determined not to risk losing him for nothing next offseason. For that reason, Golden State rejected a one-year qualifying-offer structure that would have allowed Kuminga unrestricted free agency in 2026.
Multiple teams have explored sign-and-trade possibilities. The Phoenix Suns were willing to offer four years and up to $88 million, while the Sacramento Kings presented a shorter deal featuring a player option. Golden State balked at both scenarios, believing the proposed returns—described as role players and draft considerations—were insufficient.
Head coach Steve Kerr has told associates that Kuminga would receive substantial minutes if he re-signs, but the player’s camp questions that outlook, citing Kerr’s postseason comments about line-up fit with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler.
Until the impasse is resolved, the Warriors’ remaining roster moves remain on hold.
