Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. Addresses Injuries, Trade Strategy and Coaching Future

Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said the franchise was prepared to send “several” future first-round picks and swaps to Milwaukee at last month’s trade deadline had the Bucks been willing to move Giannis Antetokounmpo. Speaking Tuesday on The TK Show podcast with Tim Kawakami, Dunleavy pointed to the club’s current rash of injuries as a reminder of why sacrificing long-term draft capital can be risky.

“When your best players are out and you’re struggling to win games, you appreciate having that draft capital moving forward,” Dunleavy said, noting that last season’s Jimmy Butler deal cost Golden State only its 2025 first-rounder and no future assets.

Curry unlikely to be shut down

The Warriors have been without leading scorer Stephen Curry since Jan. 30 because of a knee issue, while Butler (torn ACL) and recent acquisition Kristaps Porziņģis (illness) are also sidelined. Asked if Curry could miss the remainder of the season, Dunleavy called such a scenario “very surprising,” though he refused to rule it out entirely.

“I’m not a doctor, and things can go a certain way,” he said. “Just because he’s not playing right now, I have to acknowledge there’s a chance. But we don’t expect that.”

Kerr’s future appears secure

Dunleavy said he sees no reason Steve Kerr won’t be coaching the Warriors in the 2026-27 season, stressing that the organization’s current focus is “getting this thing right the rest of the season.” While the decision ultimately lies with Kerr, Dunleavy added, “I would project that he’s our coach next year.”

Kuminga trade and Porziņģis medicals

The general manager confirmed the team decided to trade forward Jonathan Kuminga after the player’s reported request to be moved. “You want people who want to be here,” Dunleavy said. “It was just the right thing to do at the time.”

Dunleavy also defended the information-gathering process that preceded the February acquisition of Porziņģis, who has appeared in only one game for Golden State. “From the information we had, I feel good about our evaluation on the medical side,” he said, while acknowledging the complexity of the situation.

The Warriors entered Tuesday four games under .500 as they attempt to navigate a season defined by injuries and roster turnover.
