The Golden State Warriors said Thursday that forward Jonathan Kuminga’s desire to be moved has not disturbed the team’s focus, even as the club defeated the New York Knicks the same night at Chase Center.
Head coach Steve Kerr told reporters the 21-year-old forward remains well-liked inside the locker room. “Jonathan’s a great young guy,” Kerr said. “There won’t be a distraction.”
Veteran leaders echoed the coach. Draymond Green summarized the mood bluntly, explaining that players are unfazed “because he is not a distraction.” Stephen Curry added that his only concern is winning and predicted the situation will “resolve itself.” Jimmy Butler, speaking in support of Kuminga, said he wants the former lottery pick to “be happy” with whatever happens next.
Kuminga’s request follows a turbulent stretch. After flashing potential two seasons ago, he dealt with injuries, rotation changes, and a protracted restricted free-agency process before re-signing on a two-year contract that includes a team option. Although he opened the current campaign strongly, his minutes dwindled, and he has not appeared in a game for several weeks.
Kerr called the circumstances “difficult” but typical of NBA life, emphasizing that personal relationships remain intact.
Multiple clubs are monitoring the situation, according to league sources. The Sacramento Kings are still interested, though their current proposal is reportedly less robust than last summer’s, while the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks are also tracking developments. Golden State can evaluate offers until the league’s trade window closes on February 5.
For now, the Warriors are stacking wins; Thursday’s victory came against a Knicks squad missing guard Jalen Brunson. Team veterans contend that continued success tends to quiet any outside noise.
