Golden State remains in a holding pattern while restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga weighs a new three-year offer against an $8 million qualifying offer that would let him enter unrestricted free agency next summer. The impasse has halted the Warriors’ efforts to add veterans, including reported targets Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, Seth Curry and Cody Martin.
The franchise currently has just 10 players under contract—the fewest in the NBA—and still must address unsigned draft picks Alex Toohey and Will Richard as well as two-way restricted free agent Taran Armstrong.
Kuminga’s Status Affecting Wider Market
League sources said several teams are waiting on Kuminga’s decision before finalizing other moves. Sacramento, for example, has shown interest in unrestricted free agent Russell Westbrook but is monitoring the Warriors’ situation first. Westbrook, the most accomplished player still available, has had no confirmed meetings beyond the Kings.
Grimes, Sixers Face Deadline
Philadelphia guard Quentin Grimes is another restricted free agent without a deal. Discussions have been quiet as the October 1 deadline for his qualifying offer approaches.
Achiuwa Still Unsigned
Precious Achiuwa, who turned 26 this summer, has drawn attention from both NBA and EuroLeague clubs. Panathinaikos explored signing him before moving on to Richaun Holmes, while Miami’s interest is limited by its proximity to the luxury-tax threshold.
Other Names on the Board
Several familiar veterans remain available with training camps less than two weeks away: Ben Simmons—who has contemplated retirement—Monte Morris, Cameron Payne, Malik Beasley (still involved in a gambling investigation), Alec Burks, Mo Bamba and Thomas Bryant.
With roster spots dwindling and preseason fast approaching, many teams appear content to wait for the Kuminga stalemate to break before making further commitments.
