San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama received negative X-ray results after leaving Monday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers with a left rib contusion, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Additional evaluations are planned, but team officials are reportedly confident the injury is not serious.
Wembanyama departed late in the second quarter after logging 16 minutes. The 7-foot-4 forward landed hard earlier in the half and was ruled out shortly afterward. Before exiting, he posted 17 points, five rebounds and three blocks, helping the Spurs outscore Philadelphia by seven with him on the floor.
The 16-minute appearance carries postseason implications. Under league rules, a player must participate in at least 65 games, with a minimum of 15 minutes in each, to remain eligible for most end-of-season awards. Monday’s outing satisfies that requirement, leaving Wembanyama needing just one 20-minute game over San Antonio’s final three contests to fully qualify.
The 20-year-old is widely viewed as a front-runner for Defensive Player of the Year and is expected to receive All-NBA consideration. He has also garnered some support in the MVP conversation during his debut campaign.
