San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama left Wednesday night’s 134-132 win over the New York Knicks after hyperextending his left knee, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Initial examinations showed no significant injury.
“I’m feeling good, just sore. I’m confident,” Wembanyama told reporters, adding that he was “close to coming back” into the game before team staff held him out. “It was just a hyperextension. It should be minimal.”
The incident occurred midway through the fourth quarter at Frost Bank Center. Wembanyama collided knee-to-knee with Knicks forward Karl-Anthony Towns while battling for a rebound and landed awkwardly. He remained on the floor for several seconds until San Antonio committed an intentional foul to stop play, then headed straight to the locker room.
As he exited, the 7-foot-4 rookie told nearby fans, “I’ll be back.” He later returned to the bench wearing slippers rather than basketball shoes, signaling his night was over.
Despite losing their star, the Spurs erased a late deficit to secure the two-point victory. The club will await further evaluation to determine Wembanyama’s availability moving forward.
Wednesday marked only Wembanyama’s third start since mid-November. He missed 12 games with a calf strain, then appeared off the bench in seven contests—including the NBA Cup championship against the Knicks—to rebuild conditioning.
