CLEVELAND — Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey avoided a fracture in his sprained right pinky, head coach Nick Nurse said Monday after imaging tests came back clean.
Maxey injured the finger with 16 seconds left in Saturday’s 126-116 loss to the Atlanta Hawks when he collided with teammate Adem Bona. The All-Star guard immediately clutched his right hand and left for the locker room.
The 76ers performed both X-rays and an MRI, and neither revealed a break. “No breaks,” Nurse told reporters before Monday night’s matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers. “Now he’s got to see the hand specialists to figure out what’s next.”
Philadelphia has already ruled Maxey out through Tuesday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies while specialists determine a treatment plan. The team is monitoring the situation closely after the guard dealt with a similar hand issue last season.
Despite the setback, Nurse said Maxey is in good spirits and eager to return. The 23-year-old has been one of the league’s most productive guards this season, leading the NBA with 1,767 total points and posting career-best averages of 29.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 6.7 assists over 61 games.
Philadelphia enters Monday’s game in eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
