Tyler Herro Aims for Monday Return Against Mavericks

Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro plans to make his first appearance of the season on Monday, Nov. 24, when the Heat host the Dallas Mavericks, according to the Associated Press’ Tim Reynolds.

The 25-year-old has been sidelined since undergoing ankle surgery in September. He took part in full practice for the first time last Sunday, clearing the way for a potential return to game action.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra and Herro have both expressed confidence that the former Sixth Man of the Year can fit seamlessly into Miami’s revamped offense, which now favors quick drive-and-kick actions rather than pick-and-roll sets.

Herro is coming off his first All-Star season, during which he averaged 23.9 points, 5.5 assists and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 37.5% from beyond the arc.

Miami’s backcourt rotation has grown more crowded after the offseason acquisition of Norman Powell from the Los Angeles Clippers. Through 11 games, Powell is averaging 25.5 points and converting 46.1% of his three-point attempts. The veteran owns a career mark of 40.0% from three on 2,735 tries across 11 seasons.

The overlap between Herro and Powell could send one of them to the bench, a role Herro previously filled during his 2021-22 Sixth Man campaign. Another option is shifting Davion Mitchell to a reserve spot. Mitchell has started all 14 games this season, posting 7.4 assists, 10.8 points and providing on-ball defense that Miami has often lacked from its scoring guards.

Herro’s official status for Monday will be determined after the team’s upcoming practices and medical evaluations.
