PORTLAND, Ore. — Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija logged five points, four assists and one rebound in 15 minutes during Sunday’s All-Star Game, but the appearance itself carried far greater weight. The 25-year-old became the first Israeli-born player ever selected for the event, a milestone he called “a blessing to represent” for his country.

Acquired from Washington in the summer of 2024, Avdija is in the midst of a career year, averaging 25.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.6 assists through 46 games — production matched by only two other NBA players this season. He said he hopes to remain in Portland long term and help shape “a good culture” during the franchise’s rebuild.

Lillard’s Comeback Motivation

Veteran guard Damian Lillard, recovering from a torn Achilles suffered last spring, spoke over the weekend about leaning on advice from Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum and Rudy Gay, all of whom have dealt with serious injuries. Buoyed by their words, Lillard captured Saturday’s three-point contest and said his goal was to “represent strength for people” facing adversity.

Rising Stars Face-Off

Rookie center Donovan Clingan and first-year guard Yang Hansen — usually practice adversaries — squared off Friday in the Rising Stars mini-tournament. Clingan called the on-court matchup “fun” and said the experience underscored the work required to graduate from Friday night to a Sunday All-Star slot in the future.

Moda Center Funding Request

Off the floor, the organization has asked Oregon legislators for roughly $600 million in public financing to renovate the 29-year-old Moda Center ahead of the team’s pending sale to businessman Tom Dundon. League commissioner Adam Silver said during All-Star Weekend that there are no current plans to relocate any existing franchise, but concerns about a potential move have intensified local discussions about the proposed upgrade.
