Trail Blazers Explore Direct Bid for Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Portland Trail Blazers have signaled interest in trading for two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to reporters Jake Fischer and Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

Fischer and Stein report that Portland’s front office views the likelihood of Antetokounmpo signing a long-term extension with the Blazers as “an extreme long shot.” Even so, the club has investigated what a direct acquisition might require, while continuing to consider acting as a facilitator in a larger multi-team deal—an option league sources describe as more realistic.

Several rival executives told the outlet they believe obtaining Portland guard Jrue Holiday could strengthen their own pitches for Antetokounmpo, who won a championship with Holiday in Milwaukee. The Blazers are also said to have interest in New York Knicks wing Mikal Bridges.

Portland’s roster already features both Holiday and former Bucks star Damian Lillard, players who remain close to Antetokounmpo. In terms of trade capital, the Blazers control Milwaukee’s unprotected 2028 first-round pick and swap rights in 2029 and 2030—assets acquired in the 2023 blockbuster that sent Lillard to the Bucks and Holiday to Portland. Holiday was then dealt to Boston, helping the Celtics win the 2024 title, before returning to the Blazers in a summer trade.

The organization also holds several of its own future first-round picks and young prospects, including second-year center Donovan Clingan. Additional flexibility could emerge in the offseason when protections on a 2026 pick become clearer, Shaedon Sharpe’s poison-pill restriction expires, and forward Toumani Camara becomes trade-eligible.
