Brooklyn, N.Y. — Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young will undergo an MRI on Thursday after spraining his right knee during Wednesday night’s victory over the Brooklyn Nets.
The injury occurred in the first quarter when teammate Mouhamed Gueye, pushed by Nets forward Noah Clowney on an in-bounds play, collided with Young. The All-Star immediately clutched his knee, remained on the floor momentarily, then stayed in the game for one possession before exiting, according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.
League insider Chris Haynes reported that initial evaluations found no indication of ligament damage. Head coach Quin Snyder told reporters after the game that the team is not worried about an ACL injury and will wait for imaging results before determining Young’s status.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype noted that Young left Barclays Center with a slight limp but without crutches or a walking boot.
A prolonged absence would be a major setback for Atlanta, which is trying to gain traction after a 2–3 start. The Hawks reshaped their roster in the offseason, adding Kristaps Porzingis, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard, but on-court chemistry has developed slowly.
Young entered Wednesday averaging 20.8 points and 9.5 assists while shooting 19.2 percent from three-point range. The 27-year-old did not reach a contract extension with Atlanta this summer; he remains eligible for a four-year, $223 million deal and holds a $49 million player option for the 2026-27 season, giving him the flexibility to test free agency as early as next year.
