ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon said this week he believes the Dallas Mavericks will eventually move Anthony Davis, despite the franchise’s public statements that a contract extension remains possible.
“The Mavericks are telling people, ‘Oh, we still might extend him this summer,’” MacMahon noted on ESPN. “If you do that, that’s not going to be good business for the Mavericks. … I think it’s a matter of when and not if Anthony Davis is traded. I just don’t know when.”
Davis will become eligible in August for a four-year, $275 million maximum extension. His current deal pays $54.1 million this season, $58.5 million in 2026-27, and includes a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28.
Multiple reports indicate Dallas is willing to test the trade market not only for Davis but also for Daniel Gafford, Klay Thompson, and D’Angelo Russell while reevaluating the roster following the blockbuster Luka Doncic transaction.
MacMahon added that any return for Davis is unlikely to match the typical superstar package. “I don’t anticipate it’s going to be like three first-round picks,” he said.
The 31-year-old’s health remains a concern. Since arriving in Dallas, Davis has appeared in just 21 games and only 12 this season because of a left calf injury. When available, he is averaging 20.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks.
