The Minnesota Timberwolves have officially re-signed veteran guard Mike Conley for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign, according to Friday’s NBA transaction log.
Conley, 36, returns after a deliberate series of moves designed to trim payroll. Minnesota traded his $10.8 million expiring contract to the Chicago Bulls on Feb. 3. Chicago immediately sent him to the Charlotte Hornets, who waived him the next day. Because league rules only bar a player from rejoining the team that last traded him, the sequence cleared a path for the Timberwolves to bring him back once he cleared waivers.
The organization waited the full 14-day period before finalizing the new agreement, preserving salary-cap and luxury-tax flexibility while remaining above the league’s minimum roster threshold. Minnesota still has one opening on its 15-man roster.
Now in his 19th NBA season, Conley started for the Timberwolves after arriving at the 2023 trade deadline but moved to a reserve role this year behind Donte DiVincenzo. He is averaging career lows in minutes, points, assists and shooting percentage, yet team executives have continued to value his leadership and calm presence in the locker room.
Conley’s new contract is a prorated veteran minimum deal. He is expected to serve as a situational option during the stretch run, especially after Minnesota added guard Ayo Dosunmu at the trade deadline.
