As Boston’s first practice of 2025–26 looms, forward Jayson Tatum is coming to terms with the reality that he could miss most—or all—of the upcoming season. Speaking with Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, Tatum said the torn right Achilles he sustained in Game 4 of last spring’s Eastern Conference semifinals still keeps him off the court 19 weeks later.

“I was devastated … it felt unfair,” Tatum told the paper. “Media day is Monday and practice is Tuesday, and it’s becoming a reality that I won’t be out there.” The 27-year-old has progressed to walking without assistance and has sought advice from fellow Achilles patients Tyrese Haliburton, Dejounte Murray, and Damian Lillard. He said resuming travel and light workouts has helped him “start to feel like myself” again.

Ownership Transition and Cost-Cutting Trades

At a Thursday news conference, former majority owner Wyc Grousbeck—now alternate governor and CEO—said dealing Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to trim payroll would have been required even without this summer’s sale of the franchise. Grousbeck noted he served on the committee that negotiated the current collective bargaining agreement, whose tax thresholds prompted the moves.

New controlling owner William Chisholm added that his priority is “to win championships and raise banners” and pledged to “do whatever it takes” to keep the club in title contention.

Training-Camp Storylines

The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach outlined three early camp questions: who will seize minutes at center, how Jaylen Brown adapts to an expanded role, and what the club expects from guard Anfernee Simons, now entering the final season of his contract.

Simons’ $26 million expiring deal also shapes Boston’s trade flexibility. In a MassLive mailbag, Brian Robb wrote that the salary limits immediate options but could become useful as the season progresses. Robb added that a long-term pact for Simons in Boston is unlikely, making a future trade to a team ready to invest in him a plausible outcome.
