Suns Waive Guard Cole Anthony

The Phoenix Suns have released guard Cole Anthony, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The move had been expected since the trade deadline, when Anthony arrived in a cost-cutting, three-team deal.

Phoenix delayed the waiver while exploring a potential buyout, reported Arizona Sports 98.7’s John Gambadoro. Gerald Bourguet of Suns After Dark added that the front office also waited until two-way guard Jamaree Bouyea neared his games-played limit. Head coach Jordan Ott noted this week that Anthony remained on the roster for emergency backcourt depth, though the 25-year-old never reported to the team.

Career to Date

Selected 15th overall in the 2020 draft, Anthony spent five seasons with the Orlando Magic, averaging 12.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists across 320 games while shooting 41.9% from the field and 34.5% from three.

His role diminished in recent years, leading to a 2025 offseason trade to Memphis as part of the Desmond Bane blockbuster. After a buyout with the Grizzlies, Anthony signed a one-year minimum deal with Milwaukee, where he posted 6.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 15.1 minutes over 35 appearances this season.

Roster Implications

The Suns are expected to elevate Bouyea to a standard contract, giving the club 15 players while opening a two-way slot that must be filled by next Wednesday.

If unclaimed, Anthony will clear waivers on Sunday. Because he was released before March 1, he remains playoff-eligible for any team that signs him before the end of the regular season.
