The Phoenix Suns have chosen guard Jordan Goodwin for their final standard roster spot, waiving fellow backcourt players Jared Butler and David Duke Jr. ahead of the 2025/26 season.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the decision on Friday night. Phoenix is expected to carry 14 players—one below the maximum—because of its luxury-tax position.

Goodwin Secures Return to Phoenix

Goodwin, who turns 27 next week, was claimed off waivers by the Suns in July after the Los Angeles Lakers cut him to create first-apron flexibility for the signing of Marcus Smart. His $2.35 million salary for 2025/26 is guaranteed for only $25,000.

The 6’3″ combo guard averaged 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steal while shooting 43.8% from the field and 38.2% from three in 29 games for the Lakers last season. He strengthened his case in four preseason games with Phoenix, posting 12.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals in 19.0 minutes per outing.

This marks Goodwin’s second stint with the Suns; he also appeared for the club during the 2023/24 campaign before being traded to Memphis.

Butler and Duke Head to Waivers

Butler, 25, signed a non-guaranteed training-camp deal with Phoenix after spending last year with the Wizards and 76ers. He delivered 15.5 points, 4.3 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals in four preseason contests (20.9 MPG) but did not surpass Goodwin on the depth chart.

Duke’s contract included Exhibit 10 language, positioning the four-year veteran to join the G League’s Valley Suns if he clears waivers.

Two Exhibit 10 Additions

Immediately after the cuts, Phoenix signed Nathan Mariano and Sean McDermott to Exhibit 10 agreements. Both players are expected to be released shortly, allowing the Suns to secure their G League rights.

Mariano, 22, is a 6’9″ wing who has played professionally for Franca in his native Brazil. McDermott, 28, spent part of the 2020/21 season with the Memphis Grizzlies on a two-way deal and has since played in Italy and Turkey.
