Warriors’ Stephen Curry to Undergo MRI After Right Quad Contusion

Golden State star Stephen Curry exited Wednesday’s 104-100 loss to the Houston Rockets with 35 seconds remaining after sustaining an apparent right quadriceps injury. Team officials labeled the issue a quad contusion, and an MRI is scheduled to confirm the diagnosis and gauge its severity.

The two-time MVP was shaken up by two fourth-quarter collisions. He hit the floor while guarding rookie Amen Thompson with 3:24 left, then went down again fewer than 60 seconds later on an offensive foul during a drive to the basket.

Head coach Steve Kerr expressed relief that the problem is not related to Curry’s ankles or knees but conceded the situation could disrupt Golden State’s rotation if the guard misses time. According to Nick Friedell of The Athletic, the locker-room expectation is that Curry will be sidelined for at least a couple of games.

Curry was one of two Warriors guards hurt on the night. Gary Payton II played five minutes in the first half before a sprained left ankle forced him out for good.

Houston’s victory dropped Golden State to 10-10, the club’s fourth defeat in five outings. Afterward, veterans Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green criticized the team’s defensive effort. “We don’t box out. We don’t go with the scouting report,” Butler said, adding that the group’s energy fades when shots aren’t falling. Green, informed of Butler’s remarks, responded, “Our defense is s***,” noting that performance, not rankings, defines toughness. “If there’s letdown, it kills your demeanor,” he added. “We are individually f***ing awful.”

Curry is averaging a team-high 29.1 points through 20 games this season. The Warriors’ next contest is Friday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.
