Golden State Warriors star guard Stephen Curry will remain out for a minimum of five additional games after an MRI confirmed patellofemoral pain syndrome—commonly known as runner’s knee—in his right leg, the team announced Wednesday night.

The exam showed no structural damage, but the 37-year-old will not be evaluated again for 10 days. Curry has already missed the club’s last five contests and, with this new timetable, is set to reach at least 20 absences on the season. NBA rules limit players to 65 appearances—in other words, no more than 17 missed games—to stay eligible for major postseason honors such as All-NBA teams, effectively ruling the two-time MVP out of award consideration.

Head coach Steve Kerr said Curry continues to feel lingering discomfort during individual workouts and was unable to scrimmage on Wednesday. “We were hoping he’d be ready for tonight, but it wasn’t the case. He just needs more time,” Kerr told reporters before Thursday’s game against the Boston Celtics.

Curry remains highly productive when available, averaging 27.2 points, 4.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals while shooting 46.8% from the field, 39.1% from three and 93.1% at the free-throw line across 39 games (31.3 minutes per game).

Porzingis Set for Warriors Debut

In a separate development, recently acquired center Kristaps Porzingis is expected to make his first appearance for Golden State on Thursday, according to the team. The 30-year-old will come off the bench and play roughly 15 to 20 minutes after completing a full practice Wednesday. Former Celtics teammate Al Horford said Porzingis “looked great” and praised his timing and energy.
