The Golden State Warriors will open training camp on September 30 with only nine players under standard contracts while forward Jonathan Kuminga weighs a critical decision, according to Marc Stein’s latest Substack report.

Kuminga, 22, has until October 1 to accept an $8 million qualifying offer or sign a reported three-year, $75 million proposal that includes a team option for the third season. Stein notes it would be surprising if the former No. 7 pick walks away from roughly $40 million in guaranteed money, though he labels that expectation as informed speculation.

Golden State’s expected signings

To preserve cap flexibility while Kuminga decides, the Warriors have kept five roster spots open. League sources expect those vacancies to be filled by Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, Seth Curry, and second-round pick Will Richard. Plans call for Horford to receive the taxpayer mid-level exception, with the other four players inking minimum deals.

Wizards’ interest in Ace Bailey

Stein reports that chatter since June’s draft indicated the Washington Wizards—holders of the No. 6 pick—were Ace Bailey’s preferred destination before Utah selected the wing at No. 5. Washington’s subsequent two-way signing of Sharife Cooper last week drew notice around the league because Cooper is the son of Bailey’s manager, Omar Cooper.

Horton-Tucker’s European stop

Six-year NBA veteran Talen Horton-Tucker officially joined Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce on a two-year contract over the weekend. Stein writes that the guard hopes to return to the NBA next summer if his first season overseas goes smoothly, suggesting the deal includes a first-year opt-out.

Mavericks monitoring Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis has taken part in limited five-on-five scrimmages for the Dallas Mavericks, his first full-court action since July eye surgery. While the early runs are encouraging, Dallas plans to proceed cautiously once camp begins, recognizing that pickup intensity does not match formal training-camp demands.

The Warriors’ camp opens in one week, but the final shape of their roster—and Kuminga’s status—remains unresolved.
