Stein: Offseason Trade More Likely for Giannis; Westbrook Still Unsigned; Mavericks Eye Macao

Giannis Antetokounmpo is unlikely to be moved before the upcoming trade deadline, with any potential deal more probable during the 2026 offseason, according to Marc Stein’s latest Substack column.

Stein’s report follows revelations that the Bucks and Knicks held summer discussions about the two-time MVP. Antetokounmpo told reporters he is content in Milwaukee “right now” but might reassess his position “in six, seven months,” noting that trade temptations typically surface between seasons.

The Bucks front office placed a significant bet in July, buying out Damian Lillard’s contract to free enough cap space to sign center Myles Turner away from Indiana. Beyond Turner, the roster remains largely unchanged from the squad that went 48-34 and exited in the first round last spring. Antetokounmpo has repeatedly emphasized his championship ambitions and could revisit a trade request if Milwaukee fails to advance.

The 30-year-old forward enters the first season of a three-year, $175MM extension inked shortly after Lillard arrived in 2023. His deal runs through 2026/27 and includes a $62.8MM player option for 2027/28.

Westbrook Waiting on NBA Offer

With eight days left before opening night, free-agent guard Russell Westbrook remains unsigned. League sources told Stein there have been “zero” talks about the 36-year-old continuing his career overseas. Westbrook is reportedly interested in joining the Kings, but is prepared to wait for an NBA opportunity even if it materializes later in the season.

Mavericks Set for Macao Preseason Games

Dallas is expected to play two preseason contests at The Venetian Macao resort next October, Stein reports. Team governor Patrick Dumont reportedly played a key role in mending the NBA’s business ties with China after the league’s 2019 fallout stemming from then-Rockets executive Daryl Morey’s social-media post supporting Hong Kong protests.

Referees Testing In-Game Earpieces

NBA officials wore earpieces throughout the preseason to improve on-court communication, according to Stein. The devices could become standard equipment once the regular season begins.
