The San Antonio Spurs will be without reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle for at least one to two weeks after an MRI on Monday revealed a left hip flexor strain, the club said in a statement.
The injury was sustained during Sunday’s game against the Sacramento Kings. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Castle will be re-evaluated in seven to 14 days, ruling him out for upcoming contests against Memphis on Tuesday, Atlanta on Thursday, and Phoenix on Sunday. Additional absences remain possible depending on his recovery.
Castle, 21, had opened his sophomore campaign strongly, posting averages of 18.4 points, 7.8 assists, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.8 steals while shooting 50.3% across his first 12 appearances. He was hurt early in his 13th game of the season.
His absence leaves San Antonio minus three of its four leading scorers. Castle joins Victor Wembanyama (left calf strain) and Dylan Harper (left calf strain) on the injured list. The team also announced that point guard Jordan McLaughlin is sidelined with a right hamstring strain suffered during a workout and confirmed by Monday’s MRI.
Despite the rash of injuries, the Spurs still have De’Aaron Fox available at point guard. Fox, whose season debut was delayed by a hamstring issue, has started the past five games and averaged 26.0 points and 10.5 assists over his last two outings.
