The San Antonio Spurs are moving Austin Spurs head coach Scott King to the NBA bench as an assistant under lead assistant Mitch Johnson, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
King, 31, earned 2023-24 G League Coach of the Year honors after guiding Austin to a 22-12 record. The club posted the league’s best defensive rating (102.3) and registered a G League-record +23.5 average margin of victory.
He began his coaching career as a video intern with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in 2018-19. King later held video roles with the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks, where a sideline exchange with forward Julius Randle—who knocked away a laptop King was holding—briefly went viral.
Named Austin’s head coach before last season, King steered the Spurs to the Western Conference finals, where they fell to the eventual champion Stockton Kings. He now joins Johnson and head coach Gregg Popovich’s staff for the upcoming NBA campaign.
