San Antonio’s Mitch Johnson has secured one of the three coaching slots for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game. The first-year head coach clinched the honor on Sunday night when the Spurs’ 33-16 record, boosted by a win over Orlando, held up against Denver’s 33-17 mark after the Nuggets fell to Oklahoma City.
“It would be an honor and humbling to be able to be a part of All-Star Weekend with the best players in this league,” Johnson said. “The league always does a great job of putting a great weekend on. It’s an example of and a reflection of the work that these guys have put in.”
Johnson claimed the Western Conference spot that went to the coach whose team held the conference’s second-best record as of Feb. 1. Oklahoma City’s Mark Daigneault, whose Thunder own the NBA’s top record for the second straight year, was ineligible after coaching the All-Star Game last season.
Nuggets coach David Adelman, also in his first full season, narrowly missed out when Denver slipped to third in the West standings with Sunday’s loss. In the East, Detroit’s J.B. Bickerstaff locked up his conference’s coaching position on Jan. 24.
The league has not yet detailed how the third and final All-Star coaching assignment will be filled.
Johnson becomes only the second coach in Spurs history to guide an All-Star roster, joining Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich. San Antonio finished 34-48 a season ago, a 12-win improvement from 2023-24. With 33 victories already, the club is tracking toward approximately 55 wins, which would mark its best campaign since 2016-17.
