Austin, TX — August 19, 2025 — The San Antonio Spurs have selected 31-year-old Australian coach Jacob Chance to guide their G League affiliate in Austin, the organization confirmed Tuesday.

Chance arrives with a decade of experience in Australia’s National Basketball League. He served on the Perth Wildcats’ bench during four championship runs, later became associate head coach of the Tasmania JackJumpers under Scott Roth and most recently worked for Melbourne United. Internationally, he was an assistant with the Australian men’s national team under former head coach Brian Goorjian and took charge of the Boomers during a World Cup qualifying window in February.

Goorjian praised Chance’s command of video analysis, on-court instruction and relationship-building, noting that veterans such as Joe Ingles and Patty Mills “were attracted to him” despite no prior connection. “As I walked away from the Boomers, my advice to Basketball Australia for the window stuff is that Chancey can do this; you’re identifying something that’s really talented, and you’re gonna get rewarded for it,” Goorjian told ESPN’s Olgun Uluc.

Chance succeeds fellow Australian Matt Nielsen, who previously coached Austin and is now on Gregg Popovich’s staff in San Antonio. “To go back and work with Matty, who essentially got me into the industry in 2015, it was hard to say no,” Chance said.
