Veteran center Bismack Biyombo has secured a place on the San Antonio Spurs’ regular-season roster, with coaches emphasizing his value as a mentor during training camp and preseason competition.
Biyombo, 33, signed a 10-day contract in February after San Antonio traded Zach Collins to Chicago. Originally added as depth, he moved into the starting lineup when Victor Wembanyama was sidelined for the season by deep vein thrombosis. The Spurs re-signed Biyombo this summer on an Exhibit 9 deal that only guaranteed him a training-camp slot, but his influence on younger teammates convinced the club to keep him.
“I enjoy working with good people,” Biyombo said after a preseason game in which he shared the floor with four players ticketed for the G League. Forward Julian Champagnie called the big man “very selfless,” noting how Biyombo directs younger players on the court.
‘French Vanilla’ frontcourt shows promise
Spurs supporters have dubbed the Wembanyama–Luke Kornet pairing “French Vanilla.” Kornet, signed in free agency to back up the 7-foot-4 star, has logged productive stretches alongside Wembanyama during preseason action.
“Having two rim protectors can give you a lot of versatility,” Kornet said. “It should be fun figuring out the best offensive fit.”
Harper emerging at point guard
Rookie guard Dylan Harper, the No. 2 pick in June’s draft, appears to be the leading candidate to run the offense next to Wembanyama long term. Harper missed part of the preseason while recovering from thumb surgery but has impressed since returning.
“He’s shown a knack for sound decision-making,” assistant coach Mitch Johnson said. “Our job is to cultivate that, support that and challenge him.”
Waters sidelined briefly
Wing Lindy Waters III will sit out opening night after a preseason physical revealed an eye issue that requires a minor laser procedure. The team expects him back later in the week.
