The San Antonio Spurs have placed fourth-year forward Jeremy Sochan on waivers, the team confirmed Tuesday. ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported that San Antonio agreed to release the former lottery pick.

Sochan, 22, was selected ninth overall in the 2022 NBA Draft and owns an expiring $7.1 million contract. He had dropped out of head coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation in December, prompting the club to let his representatives seek trade options ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline. Although the Spurs did not complete any in-season trades, the waiver move gives Sochan a chance to join another team before the summer.

If he clears waivers — a likely scenario given his salary — Sochan will become an unrestricted free agent. Charania reported that multiple teams are expected to pursue him.

Across his first three seasons in San Antonio, Sochan logged 149 starts and averaged 27.3 minutes, 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Regarded as a versatile defender, he shot 28.7 percent from three-point range and was used in a variety of roles, including point guard and small-ball center.

Prior to the deadline, San Antonio reportedly discussed Sochan with the Suns, Bulls and Knicks. Earlier reporting from The Athletic indicated he was unlikely to negotiate a buyout, but his outlook shifted as playing time remained scarce.

Because Sochan is in his fourth NBA season, he is still eligible for a two-way contract should no team offer a standard roster spot.
