Spoelstra: Adebayo Locked in Two-Man Defensive Player Race as Heat Drop Fifth Straight

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said center Bam Adebayo should be considered neck-and-neck with rookie Victor Wembanyama for the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

“If we can really defend the way we’ve been defending the last month, then I think it’s a two-man race,” Spoelstra told reporters, adding that the decision comes down to “whatever flavor you like.”

Spoelstra also lobbied for Adebayo to earn an All-NBA nod, noting, “In terms of what he does on both sides of the floor, to me, that’s All-NBA,” while acknowledging Miami’s record is not where he would like it to be.

Defensive Identity Slipping

The Heat have lost five consecutive games, tying their longest skid of the season. Miami has surrendered at least 120 points in each of those five contests—the first time that has happened in franchise history.

Guard Norman Powell pointed to the club’s reaction to pressure as the main issue. “When the going gets tough, we let go of the rope,” he said. “We get hit and then just everybody starts worrying about what happened on offense, and teams take advantage.”

Adebayo stressed urgency as the postseason approaches. “I don’t want to be in the play-in,” he stated. “So every game, I’m going to try to go out there and do the best I can to carry this team.”

Long-Term Questions

Beyond the current slide, the franchise’s long-standing reluctance to rebuild could shape its offseason. The Miami Herald reported that Miami’s refusal to take a step back has limited its chances to acquire another star, even as the organization continues an aggressive pursuit of a “whale” acquisition.

Whether that approach changes remains an open question once the season ends.
