PORTLAND, Ore. — Former NBA center Tiago Splitter is running the Portland Trail Blazers from the bench after head coach Chauncey Billups was placed on indefinite leave. Splitter, previously an assistant, addressed reporters on Oct. 25, saying the sudden promotion was “a tough moment,” but added, “I’ve got to do my job.”

Lead assistant Nate Bjorkgren, who has prior head-coaching experience, recommended Splitter to general manager Joe Cronin. According to ESPN, Bjorkgren told Cronin he could best serve the club by continuing to oversee the defense.

Portland thrived in Splitter’s debut, routing the Golden State Warriors 139-119. “It was about them and their great play,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said afterward. “This city is going to really enjoy watching the Blazers. They play hard. They have a real identity.”

The Oregonian reports that if Billups is not cleared, the front office is evaluating a dozen potential long-term replacements. Names were not disclosed.

Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue, a longtime friend of Billups, told the Orange County Register that he spoke with Billups on Thursday night and that the embattled coach “feels good.” Lue called the situation “a tough day” for Billups and his family.

In contrast, The Athletic noted Billups appeared emotionless during a recent court appearance, an uncharacteristic look for one of the league’s more upbeat figures.
