Spain’s bid to defend its EuroBasket crown is over after a 90-86 loss to Greece on Thursday ensured the four-time champions missed the knockout stage for the first time since 1977.
The defeat, powered by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 25 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists, left Spain and Georgia tied at 2-3 in Group C. Georgia advanced on the head-to-head tiebreaker despite falling 84-76 to Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier in the day.
That Bosnian victory, sparked by a 15-point, 12-rebound effort from Jusuf Nurkic, secured the Balkans nation the 15th of 16 spots in the single-elimination round. Sandro Mamukelashvili scored a game-high 20 for Georgia in the morning matchup.
