The Dallas Mavericks used a supersized starting lineup in Monday’s preseason win over Utah, shifting No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg to point guard while D’Angelo Russell rested. Flagg joined P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II and finished with 11 points, one assist and no turnovers.
“We’ve put him in different situations—running the offense, playing off the ball,” head coach Jason Kidd said. “He has things to improve, but watching him make plays and understand the game at 18 has been really cool.” Kidd added that the same group is expected to start Wednesday against the Lakers.
Hardy Slides Behind Nembhard
Kidd turned to two-way guard Ryan Nembhard as the first reserve point guard, choosing him over Jaden Hardy, who has struggled this preseason. “Growth has to be more than scoring,” Kidd noted, citing playmaking, floor organization and defense as areas Hardy must show progress. Hardy’s three-year, $18 million extension begins this season.
Morant, Jackson Trending Up
In Memphis, head coach Tuomas Iisalo reported that Ja Morant (week-to-week with a sprained left ankle) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (recovering from turf-toe surgery) have both expanded their on-court workloads over the past week. Neither All-Star has appeared in preseason action.
Barnes Expected to Keep Starting Role
Harrison Barnes is on track to remain in San Antonio’s first unit as the Spurs finalize their opening-night rotation. The 14-year veteran has not come off the bench since the 2015-16 season and owns an active streak of 304 consecutive games played. “I’m just trying to be out there for every game,” said Barnes, who is entering the final season of a $19 million contract.
