ATLANTA — The Atlanta Hawks believe veteran guard CJ McCollum can stabilize their backcourt for the remainder of the season, according to reporting from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. McCollum, 34, was acquired from Washington after appearing in the Wizards’ first 35 games and averaging 18.8 points, 3.6 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 30.9 minutes while shooting .454 from the field, .393 from three and .804 at the foul line.
While Trae Young has been limited to 10 games because of injuries, Atlanta views McCollum as a lower-usage, more efficient scorer who can offer greater defensive resistance. His skill set is expected to complement current top scorers Jalen Johnson and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
Players-Only Meeting Fuels Wizards’ Recovery
The Wizards have rebounded from a 1-15 start to post a 9-11 record since mid-November. Center Marvin Bagley III said a players-only meeting on Nov. 16 was pivotal. “I spoke up and said my piece, and guys in the locker room spoke up as well,” Bagley noted. “We came out closer as a unit, and it makes us want to compete for each other.” Washington has won five of its last seven contests.
Orlando Bids for 2030 NBA All-Star Game
The Greater Orlando Sports Commission announced plans to pursue the 2030 NBA All-Star Game, with full support from the Orlando Magic. The franchise last hosted the event in 2012.
Powell Makes All-Star Case
Miami Heat guard Norman Powell, averaging a career-best 24.3 points on .490/.423/.861 shooting, said he “definitely” deserves All-Star consideration. After being left off last year’s roster, Powell told reporters he will temper expectations but remains hopeful.
Herro Returns Off the Bench
Heat guard Tyler Herro came off the bench Tuesday in his first game back from a toe injury, the first time he has served as a reserve since the 2023-24 season. “Just being out there was my biggest thing,” Herro said, adding that he felt healthy and was simply happy to be available.
