CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Several key figures inside the Hornets organization continue to champion guard Kon Knueppel for the 2026 NBA Rookie of the Year award.
Head coach Charles Lee told reporters the rookie conversation is “tight,” but insisted Knueppel has separated himself from competitors such as Cooper Flagg. “When you have a guy that’s been as productive, consistent and efficient as Kon on a playoff-caliber team, that’s pretty impressive,” Lee said. Executive vice president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson and forward Brandon Miller echoed Lee’s stance, pointing to advanced metrics that rank Knueppel among the league’s most effective players regardless of experience.
Magic’s Wendell Carter Jr. Plays Through Broken Nose
Orlando center Wendell Carter Jr. suffered a broken nose during Monday’s loss to Detroit and has begun wearing a protective mask, The Orlando Sentinel reported. The 27-year-old has appeared in 76 games this season, surpassing his previous career high of 68. “It’s been a goal of mine for two or three years,” Carter said, adding that sustained consistency remains his focus despite stretches of subpar play caused by fatigue and minor injuries.
Wizards to Evaluate Brian Keefe’s Future
The Wizards’ first major offseason task will be determining whether to retain head coach Brian Keefe, according to The Athletic. Monumental Basketball president Michael Winger publicly praised Keefe’s work over the past two seasons, yet league sources have questioned how smoothly the coach could transition from guiding a rebuilding roster to steering a club expected to be more competitive in 2026-27.
Alex Sarr Expected to Miss Finale
Rookie center Alex Sarr is unlikely to play in Washington’s season finale on Sunday, Keefe told reporters earlier this week. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 draft will finish his sophomore campaign having missed the final nine contests because of a left toe injury.
