The NBA on Monday named Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month and Sacramento Kings center Maxime Raynaud the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for March.
Edgecombe’s recognition snaps the four-month streak held by Charlotte Hornets wing Kon Knueppel, who captured every East award from October through February. Knueppel and Washington Wizards forward Will Riley were this month’s other finalists.
In 13 March games, Edgecombe averaged 18.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 45.4 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from three-point range and 89.5 percent at the free-throw line. The 21-year-old guard is expected to receive strong consideration for the All-Rookie First Team.
Raynaud becomes the West’s third different monthly winner this season. Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg earned the honor in October, November and January, and San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper picked it up in February. Utah Jazz forward Ace Bailey joined Flagg and Harper on this month’s ballot.
The 7-foot-1 Raynaud stepped into the Kings’ starting lineup after injuries sidelined Domantas Sabonis and Drew Eubanks. He started all 15 March contests, producing 17.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. The French rookie shot 59.5 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc, highlighted by consecutive 30-point outings on March 17 against San Antonio and March 19 versus Philadelphia.
