The Philadelphia 76ers will be without Tyrese Maxey for their next two matchups after the guard was diagnosed with a sprained fifth finger on his right hand, The Athletic’s Tony Jones reported Sunday.
Maxey is scheduled to be re-evaluated following Philadelphia’s road game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday and its home contest versus the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday.
The injury occurred in Saturday’s win over the Atlanta Hawks when Maxey collided with teammate Adem Bona. Initial concern suggested the damage could be worse, so the current diagnosis is viewed as relatively favorable.
The timing is significant for a club fighting to secure the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference, the final spot that bypasses the play-in tournament.
Maxey, selected to the All-Star Game for a second straight year, is posting career highs of 28.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 6.7 assists while shooting 46.0 percent from the floor and 37.2 percent from beyond the arc. He also leads the NBA in minutes played at 38.3 per game, serving as one of Philadelphia’s most reliable contributors in an injury-marred season.
