Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey will undergo further medical evaluation Sunday after injuring his right hand late in Saturday’s road loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
The 23-year-old All-Star collided with teammate Adem Bona in the closing minutes and immediately left for X-rays, according to The Athletic’s Tony Jones. Initial imaging was inconclusive, and the team ordered additional tests on the affected finger. Jones reported that Maxey did not wear any wrap after the game and appeared upbeat in the locker room.
An extended absence would hit Philadelphia hard. Saturday’s 115-108 defeat dropped the club to eighth place in the Eastern Conference, a half-game behind sixth and just 1½ games in front of Atlanta. Charlotte sits 2½ games back.
Career Year for Maxey
Maxey is enjoying his best NBA season, averaging 28.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 2.0 steals while shooting 46.0% from the floor and 37.2% from beyond the arc. His 38.3 minutes per game lead the league.
Injury List Continues to Grow
Philadelphia remains without Joel Embiid, who missed his fourth straight contest—and ninth in 11—with a strained right oblique. The reigning MVP will not be reevaluated for another week and is expected to sit at least through Thursday.
Kelly Oubre Jr. returned Saturday after a two-game illness absence, but rookie VJ Edgecombe missed his second consecutive outing with a lumbar contusion. Forward Paul George is still serving a 25-game suspension for taking an improper medication and cannot play until March 25.
The 76ers resume action Monday night at home against the Orlando Magic.
