Negotiations between the Philadelphia 76ers and restricted free agent guard Quentin Grimes are pointing toward a short-term agreement rather than a multi-year contract, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

The sides are discussing two primary options: a one-year “balloon” offer from Philadelphia or Grimes accepting his $8.7 million qualifying offer, which would include a no-trade clause. Grimes must decide by the league’s Oct. 1 deadline.

The 24-year-old did not attend the team’s media day while talks continued. Grimes split last season between Dallas and Philadelphia, arriving in February and averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 28 games with the Sixers. He shot 47 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range during that stretch.

Philadelphia is managing its payroll around stars Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey, a trio limited to 15 games together last season. The Sixers finished 24-58 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Discussions with Grimes remain active, but unless a breakthrough occurs soon, both sides appear poised to settle on a one-year arrangement.
