Contract talks between the Philadelphia 76ers and restricted free-agent guard Quentin Grimes remain at a standstill with training camp set to open and an Oct. 1 deadline looming, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Charania reported on NBA Today that the two sides are “very far” from an agreement. Grimes’s representatives told the reporter the 24-year-old will skip Friday’s media day and will not join the team on its upcoming preseason trip to Abu Dhabi.
Grimes arrived from Dallas at last season’s trade deadline and averaged career highs of 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 28 games with Philadelphia. Despite that surge, the Sixers have yet to commit to a long-term deal as they reshape the backcourt following the No. 3 overall draft selection of guard VJ Edgecombe and weigh the health situations of Joel Embiid and Paul George.
With the calendar ticking toward Oct. 1, three primary outcomes remain:
- Grimes accepts the one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer, gaining a no-trade clause and unrestricted free agency next summer;
- The sides agree on a different one-year contract at a higher salary;
- Philadelphia orchestrates a sign-and-trade to move the guard elsewhere.
Until a resolution is reached, the Sixers risk opening camp without one of their most productive young players.
