PHILADELPHIA — Paul George is still waiting for medical clearance to practice fully after July surgery on his left knee, but the Philadelphia 76ers forward insists his self-belief has not wavered.

“Getting healthy, I’m the Paul George that the Sixers went out and signed,” the 34-year-old said this week, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I’ve still got a lot of game in me. Playing at a high level, that’s still who I am. I’ve got to get to that point.”

George has been restricted to individual drills through the first week of training camp and his availability for the Oct. 25 season opener remains in doubt. He acknowledged expecting to be further along in his recovery, but a setback during an offseason workout slowed his timeline.

Last season, George appeared in only 41 games—his first in Philadelphia after signing a four-year, $211.5 million contract. A series of injuries, including a hyperextended knee, groin soreness and ankle problems, ended his year in mid-March.

The Sixers are allowing the eight-time All-Star to ramp up at his own pace. George said he feels closer to his pre-injury form each day and is willing to shift to power forward if needed following Guerschon Yabusele’s free-agency departure.

“Last year was tough—one of the toughest seasons I’ve been a part of,” George said. “It was a rock-bottom kind of season. I think it was a disappointment, personally, for myself and obviously for the fans here. But I do think there’s a lot to look forward to.”
