On Friday night, the Philadelphia 76ers let a 12-point third-quarter advantage slip away and fell 114-105 to a short-handed Detroit Pistons team, prompting guard Tyrese Maxey to question the club’s grit.
“You’ve got to be extremely physical. You’ve got to be mentally tougher than them,” Maxey told the Philadelphia Inquirer after the setback. “Early on we did a good job, but once they went on a couple of runs you’ve got to stay with it. I don’t think we were mentally tough.”
Oubre exits with knee issue
Kelly Oubre Jr. was held out of the second half with a left knee injury. The forward is scheduled for an MRI on Saturday. Oubre entered the night averaging 18.0 points and 5.5 rebounds over 11 appearances.
Barlow returns, reflects on missed chance
Forward Dominick Barlow played for the first time in nine games after recovering from a right elbow laceration, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. “They outworked us,” Barlow said. “They made shots, credit to them. But we’ve got to win that game.”
Edgecombe shows poise in rookie season
No. 3 overall pick VJ Edgecombe added 18 points in the loss. Through his first NBA season, the 19-year-old is averaging 15.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.3 steals. “He sort of plays like a guy who’s been in the league for a bit, which is pretty remarkable,” president of basketball operations Daryl Morey told CBS Sports.
