The Philadelphia 76ers will be without Joel Embiid for their next three contests after an MRI conducted Saturday morning revealed a strained right oblique, the team announced.
The injury rules the center out of Sunday’s road game against the Boston Celtics, as well as home matchups with the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday and the Utah Jazz on Wednesday. Embiid will be reevaluated following the back-to-back set.
Embiid first felt discomfort in his midsection during Thursday’s victory over the Miami Heat. He briefly headed to the locker room after an inadvertent blow from Kelel Ware but returned to hit a pivotal three-pointer in the final minute.
Head coach Nick Nurse did not offer an update after that game, and Embiid did not speak with reporters. The reigning MVP had just come back this week after being sidelined since Feb. 7 with knee and shin issues.
Through 33 of Philadelphia’s 59 games, the 29-year-old is averaging 26.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 31.2 minutes per night.
