Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid underwent surgery for appendicitis this week, adding another untimely obstacle to a franchise already marked by late-season misfortune.

The procedure comes less than a month before the NBA playoffs, reviving memories of Embiid’s previous postseason hurdles. Over the past several years, the reigning MVP has played through orbital fractures, in-series illnesses, Bell’s palsy and assorted lower-body injuries, each surfacing at pivotal moments.

Long List of Unlucky Turns

Embiid’s health issues are only part of the organization’s wider pattern of poorly timed setbacks:

  • The abrupt exit of architect Sam Hinkie in 2016 and the subsequent Bryan Colangelo burner-account controversy disrupted front-office continuity.
  • Last summer’s public dispute between James Harden and president of basketball operations Daryl Morey overshadowed training camp and ended with Harden’s trade request being granted.
  • Draft misfires linger. Philadelphia chose Jahlil Okafor (2015), Ben Simmons (2016) and Markelle Fultz (2017) in consecutive years, yet none became the long-term cornerstone envisioned. On draft night 2018, the club also shipped Mikal Bridges to Phoenix, a move still second-guessed as Bridges thrives elsewhere.

Bright Spots Remain

Despite the turbulence, the franchise has found some success. Tyrese Maxey has developed into an All-NBA candidate, and prospect VJ Edgecombe offers additional promise for the future roster.

Whether the latest setback ultimately derails Philadelphia’s postseason campaign will hinge on Embiid’s recovery timeline and the team’s ability to stabilize before the playoffs begin. For now, the run of ill-timed problems continues to cast a shadow at the season’s most critical stage.
