HOUSTON — The Philadelphia 76ers announced Thursday that All-Star center Joel Embiid has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will have surgery later in the day in Houston.
The club initially listed Embiid as out for Thursday night’s game against the Rockets because of an unspecified illness. A subsequent medical evaluation confirmed appendicitis, prompting the decision for an immediate appendectomy.
Philadelphia did not provide a projected recovery timetable, stating only that further updates will be released “when appropriate.” Recent NBA cases suggest the absence could stretch several weeks: Nikola Mirotić and Matthew Dellavedova each missed about five to six weeks after in-season appendectomies, while Trey Lyles was unavailable for the remainder of the 2019-20 campaign following the procedure. Cavaliers great Mark Price also had an appendectomy during his rookie year.
Embiid, the reigning league MVP, has appeared in 34 games this season. Philadelphia entered Thursday holding a postseason spot with the regular season set to conclude in mid-April.
