The Philadelphia 76ers have exercised the third-year option on guard Jared McCain’s rookie-scale contract, guaranteeing his $4,422,600 salary for the 2026-27 NBA season.
The decision, confirmed by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, locks in McCain’s deal through a third year. Philadelphia will face its next choice on the 21-year-old’s contract next autumn, when the club must accept or decline his fourth-year option worth about $6.84 million for 2027-28.
Selected 16th overall in the 2024 draft, McCain emerged as one of the early standouts of the 2024-25 rookie class. Before a season-ending torn lateral meniscus in his left knee, he averaged 15.3 points, 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds across 25.7 minutes in 23 games, shooting .460 from the field, .383 from three and .875 at the foul line.
Although he has recovered from knee surgery, McCain has yet to appear in the 2025-26 campaign after undergoing thumb surgery last month. Once cleared, he will bolster a Philadelphia backcourt led by Tyrese Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecombe, a tandem that has powered the Sixers to a 4-0 start.
NBA teams have until Friday to finalize rookie-scale option decisions. McCain’s contract was the only option Philadelphia needed to address ahead of the deadline.
