Former Seattle SuperSonics star Shawn Kemp will not serve jail time for his role in a March 2023 shooting outside a Washington state mall.

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Michael Schwartz ordered the 54-year-old to complete 30 days of electronic home monitoring, one year of state supervision and 240 hours of community service. Kemp pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in May.

Prosecutors had requested a nine-month jail term, but the judge opted for a lighter sentence. Kemp maintained he fired back in self-defense after two men in a Toyota 4Runner allegedly opened fire on him. His attorneys said the dispute began when those men stole Kemp’s truck, cellphone and sports memorabilia in Seattle. Both the 4Runner and another vehicle were hit by gunfire, but no injuries were reported.

In a statement released through attorney W. Scott Boatman to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears, Kemp thanked the court for its decision and expressed remorse. “Shawn is genuinely regretful of certain decisions he made that day and is committed to working with kids to help them understand the potential consequences of not thinking twice or acting impulsively,” the statement read.
