Scouts Cautious on Alex Sarr’s Ceiling, but Expect Progress in Year Two

Five NBA talent evaluators told The Athletic’s Josh Robbins they do not project Washington Wizards center Alex Sarr, the No. 2 pick in 2024, to develop into the top-two option on a championship team. While each scout noted upside, concerns centered on shooting range and physical strength.

Evaluators Outline Concerns and Optimism

One scout questioned whether Sarr will ever stretch the floor consistently, and another said the 7-footer must add muscle to maximize his rim-protecting impact, noting he currently weighs less than several starting wings. Even so, multiple evaluators predicted a “big leap” in Sarr’s second season, citing late-rookie-year improvement and a clearer role.

Calf Injury Nearly Behind Him

Sarr strained his left calf during EuroBasket but told reporters Saturday he expects to play in Washington’s preseason opener Sunday against Toronto after a week of ramp-up work. The matchup will mark the first organized game against his brother, Olivier Sarr, who is with the Raptors on an Exhibit 10 contract.

Vukcevic Studies Jokic

Fellow Wizards big man Tristan Vukcevic spent EuroBasket alongside three-time MVP Nikola Jokic on Serbia’s national team. Vukcevic said he observed Jokic’s decision-making in short-roll situations and hopes to replicate those reads in Washington.

McCollum Highlights Watkins’ Defensive Potential

Guard CJ McCollum offered early reviews of rookies Tre Johnson, Will Riley, and Jamir Watkins. McCollum praised all three but singled out Watkins as a potential lockdown defender capable of guarding every position. According to McCollum, Watkins has been studying elite stopper Herb Jones and owns the physical tools—6-foot-5 or 6-foot-6 with long arms—to thrive as a coveted 3-and-D player.
