The Sacramento Kings confirmed Wednesday that their two highest-paid players, Domantas Sabonis and Zach LaVine, will not return this season after undergoing separate surgeries, according to league sources cited by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Sabonis had an operation to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, an injury first sustained in mid-November. The three-time All-Star attempted to play through the issue, sat out 27 games for rehabilitation, and appeared in eight contests before the All-Star break. With Sacramento sitting at 12-44 and mired in a 14-game losing streak, the center opted for a full repair to focus on long-term health. Sabonis has two seasons and $94 million left on his contract.
LaVine, who averaged 19.2 points across 39 games, elected for surgery to address a tendon injury in his right hand after missing five of his last ten outings. The guard holds a $48.9 million player option for 2024-25 and is widely expected to exercise it.
The Kings explored trade possibilities for both players before the February deadline but did not finalize any deals. With Scott Perry now overseeing basketball operations, league insiders expect those discussions to resume during the offseason.
