The Houston Rockets are positioned to propose a two-year contract extension worth roughly $100 million to Kevin Durant, NBA reporter Kurt Helin of NBC Sports said, citing conversations held during Summer League.
While the 15-time All-Star is eligible for a two-year, $122.1 million maximum extension, one league source told NBC Sports the forward may accept a deal about $10 million per season below that figure—still averaging $50 million annually.
Durant, 35, is set to earn $54.7 million in 2024-25, the final season of his current contract. Houston acquired him from the Phoenix Suns in a package that sent Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, this year’s No. 10 draft pick and five second-rounders to Phoenix.
The former MVP averaged 26.6 points last season while shooting 52.7 percent from the field, 43.0 percent from three-point range and 83.9 percent at the free-throw line. He now joins a roster featuring Amen Thompson, Alperen Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr. and Fred VanVleet under head coach Ime Udoka, who coached Durant with the Brooklyn Nets in 2020-21.
According to The Athletic’s Kelly Iko and Sam Amick, Durant is “incredibly excited” about the move to Houston, though the team did not hold an introductory news conference. Club officials believe the partnership is likely to extend beyond his current deal.
Over 1,123 career games, Durant owns averages of 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists and captured consecutive championships and Finals MVP honors with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018.
