League sources told reporter Jake Fischer of The Stein Line that the Atlanta Hawks are not expected to open contract-extension negotiations with guard Trae Young during the coming offseason.

Young, 25, becomes eligible for a four-year deal worth up to $229 million but is set to play next season on his existing salary of $45.9 million. His current contract includes a $48.9 million player option for 2026-27, giving him a path to unrestricted free agency next summer if he declines the option.

According to Fischer, representatives for the three-time All-Star have long anticipated finishing out the final guaranteed season of the agreement rather than locking in a new pact exceeding $200 million. Any decision on the 2026-27 option would come after that.

Last season Young averaged 24.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and an NBA-best 11.6 assists while shooting 41.1 percent from the floor, 34.0 percent from three and 87.5 percent at the line. The Hawks, who reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021 but have not won a playoff series since, missed the 2025 postseason.

Atlanta’s front office has been active this summer, signing Luke Kennard and acquiring Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kristaps Porziņģis. Fischer reported that Young is confident he can steer the team back to the playoffs, a scenario that could prompt renewed contract talks.

Through six NBA seasons, the guard owns career averages of 25.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 9.8 assists, along with four All-Star selections and one All-NBA nod.
