Golden State’s second-round selection Alex Toohey is still without a contract, yet the 6’8” Australian forward insists he landed in the ideal situation. Picked 52nd overall on June 26, Toohey told ESPN’s Olgun Uluc that the Warriors’ pace-and-space style and longstanding Australian ties made them “the best of the lot.”
Toohey pointed to former Golden State center Andrew Bogut and ex-Bull Luc Longley—both part-owners of the NBL’s Sydney Kings, Toohey’s team for the past two seasons—as proof of a connection that helped him study the Warriors’ schemes long before draft night.
Despite being a late pick, Toohey expects to contribute quickly once the club decides whether to sign him to its 15-man roster or a two-way deal. His status is on hold while the Warriors navigate restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga’s negotiations and try to stay below the hard cap and both tax aprons.
The 20-year-old received his first NBA test in July’s Summer League, averaging 6.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in 21.6 minutes across six games but shooting only 26.2 percent from the field. He called the jump in athleticism and the Warriors’ fast tempo “tough,” noting the team often relied on wearing opponents down. Still, Toohey said the coaching staff’s belief in him helps build the confidence to deliver in transition and knock down open threes.
